Love grows at Jasper

At the heart of love is community. Whether it’s romance, friendship or family, love thrives where connection is practiced every day.

At Jasper, neighbors build deep relationships by putting community into action. From a wave across the street to club projects, new stories begin with ordinary interactions.  Partners and families grow stronger with support and belonging.

We see it in relationships that last a lifetime: Through consistent, ordinary care, extraordinary love grows.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Jasper resident Rod Manion shared his love story, sparked by a simple connection. We celebrate all the couples like Rod and Cheryl who continue their love stories at Jasper.

“I’ve always enjoyed watching the NFL Super Bowls over the years, but some have more meaning than others for me. On Jan. 15, 1978, the Dallas Cowboys played the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII. (The Cowboys won 27-10).

My close friend Jim invited me to his house to watch the game. He told me in advance that his girlfriend, Jan Swan, and another friend would be there. The “other friend” was Jan’s younger sister, Cheryl Swan. At the time, I knew Jan but had never met Cheryl, who had just returned from working in Iran.

As it turned out, it was more than a chance meeting with Cheryl. It marked the start of our romance, and we were married in August 1979.

And here we are, 48 Super Bowls later.

How to share the love

Ready to add more love to Jasper’s stories? Try these ideas to nourish new and existing connections. You never know where a moment may lead.

  • Respond to the small bids: When someone shares a quick story at the mailbox, use it as an opening. When a loved one or neighbor mentions a project, follow up to ask them how it’s going.
  • Partner in the boring stuff: Turn mundane tasks like yard work or errands into shared activities. Who can you collaborate with?
  • Step out of your comfort zone: When your spouse, family or friend brings up an event, don’t brush it off. Even if it’s outside of your interests, it’s a chance to engage and understand others. On the flip side, invite people to try your interests too.
  • Tell your stories: Action influences action. When you share your experiences, it motivates others to move. What has shaped your place in the community, and how can you use it to encourage your neighbors?
